Chinchillas are not great pets for kids or teens, since they (the people) will lose interest before the animal has completed it’s life cycle. And chins are nothing like dogs or cats, so leaving them with the folks, or finding a new home is not always an option.

I would say a hamster, gerbil, mouse or rat. Cheaper investment, less time involved and shorter life span.

Have you considered a rat? I have had no previous experience with hamsters, although a couple of my friends have had them, snd they seem to make good pets. Mice have no bladder control though, so if you decide on one, be prepared to spend a lot of time cleaning! I have had rats for the past five years, and they have all the cute-ness of mice, and all the friendliness and lovliness of hamsters, but just seem to have something extra that you don’t get from the other two.
